The Mystery of Our Salvation

Aug 9, 2026    Jim Burnham

What if the salvation we sometimes take for granted was once a mystery so deep that the greatest prophets of the Old Testament spent their lives searching for answers they could never fully reach?

That's exactly what 1 Peter 1:10-12 invites us to consider. The prophets who wrote of a coming Messiah were handed puzzle pieces without a box lid. They saw glimpses of a suffering servant in Isaiah 53 and a glorious, reigning king in Isaiah 11, but couldn't reconcile the two. They searched carefully, compared scrolls, and inquired deeply — yet the full picture remained just beyond their grasp. What they faithfully recorded wasn't even for their own generation, but for ours.

The salvation we've received is the very thing those prophets strained to see across centuries. And if that weren't enough, we're told that angels themselves lean over the railing of heaven, gazing intently at what God has done for us through Christ — a grace they've never needed and can never personally experience.

So the question this message presses into our hearts is simple but weighty: do we value what the prophets longed to understand and what angels marvel to observe? This message calls us to recover a sense of awe about our own salvation.
